Water Pump Repair

Troubeshooting

  1. Engine fails to crank:
    • Check that the battery is charged. If you have left your hood open for a long time the light under the hood may have drained the battery.
    • Check to make sure the Mass Air FLow Sensor (MAF) has been reconnected properly.
    • Check that the Intaje Air Temperure (IAT) sensor has been re-connected properly.
  2. Engine cranks but runs rough:
    • Check to make sure the Mass Air FLow Sensor (MAF) has been reconnected properly.
    • Check that the Intaje Air Temperure (IAT) sensor has been re-connected properly.
    • Check to make sure the air intake tubes have properly connected to the throttle body. If air is leaking direclty into the throttle body it bypasses the MAF and IAT sensors and can cause mixture problems.
  3. Engine cranks but is making odd noises:
    • Check to make sure the fan shroud has sufficient clearance and is not being hit by the fan. The 4 (8mm) bolts that secure the fan shroud to the radiator can be loosened and you can adjust the fan shroud as necessary to clear the fan.
    • Check to make sure the serpentine belt is seated properly on all the various pulleys. If it is not seated correctly it could come off or break.
  4. Coolant is leaking:
    • Check that you tightened the upper radiator hose at the radiator and thermostat housing.
    • Make sure you tightened the hose clamps on the heater hoses.
    • Make sure you tightened the radiator drain plug..
    • If it's leaking on the front-center of the engine you probably have a gasket leak. This is not uncommon due to the (stupid?) two-gasket design of this particalur water pump. Both gaskets have to seat properly or the pump will leak under pressure. Go kick the cat, have an adult beverage and go back to step 1 and start all over.
